Prevention is better than cure
Recently, several scams/fraud have been reported involving aadhaar card issued by UIDAI. We usually leave copies of this card in several places, as proof of identity e.g. hotels, banks, airlines, SIM card providers, courier services etc. Your aadhaar is also linked to your PAN, which itself is known to several agencies. Such unattended copies can become the origin of several scams/fraud. A remedy for these scams/fraud is the use of "masked" aadhaar cards (Masked aadhaar or m-adhaar) . Masked aadhaar (m-aadhaar) is a feature that hides the first 8 digits of your aadhaar number and shows only the last 4 digits. It protects your privacy and prevents misuse of your aadhaar number. You can also take more steps, to prevent misuse of your Aadhaar card
You will need the following for creating your masked aadhaar card:
- Your current aadhaar card
- The mobile phone registered on your aadhaar card
- A personal computer system with a good connection to the Internet
To create and download a masked aadhaar card
- Go to the UIDAI website which manages aadhaar
- Follow menus My aadhaar -->> Get aadhaar -->> Download aadhaar
- Enter aadhaar number , enter Captcha text --> Click on Send OTP
- In the new screen which shows up, tick yes for "Do you want masked aadhaar ?" And then, enter the OTP you just received on your mobile phone.
- Submit OTP
- Verify and download. You will get an encrypted/locked pdf file.
- Save pdf file. Open it using the password.
- Your password is the First four letters of your name as on the aadhaar card and year of birth in YYYY format.
- If your name is "Popeye Sailor" , born in 1999, the password will be POPE1999 (upper case).
- Save the decrypted/unlocked version of your masked aadhaar for all future use. Only the last four digits will be visible on your masked aadhaar. All other digits will be shown as XXXX XXXX. These four digits are not enough for any scam/fraud.

How can one raise a request for "Aadhaar PVC Card" (plastic laminated card) ?
"Aadhaar PVC Card" request can be raised by visiting the UIDAI Official Website (https://www.uidai.gov.in or https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) or mAadhaar application. Charges to be paid are Rs.50/- (Inclusive of GST & speed post charges).
You must also take some steps, to prevent misuse of your Aadhaar card
